I never came across building owners who required in the lease with tenants that only one person can occupy a one bedroom apartment and that a couple or two friends who need to split the rent were not allowed in a one bedroom space. The old building owners did not have a problem with this arrangement even though my roommate failed to inform them that I was living there (I had no idea that it was due to her leasing terms) but because the new building owners did have a problem with it so I had to move. I didn't take his offer to move into a two bedroom apartment since I was not confident that I could get a roommate in time to help me split the rent. Also during this time I lost my job. In one way the building owner showed me compassion but in another way he didn't. I was especially angry with my roommate who lied to me from the beginning that it was okay for me to be there. Landlords need to understand that not everyone in Toronto is making a middle class income and need help to get by living in this city.
